  • Copyrights, Licensing, and Trademark Use

Ultima Linux is a large project, and is covered by numerous copyright agreements; this page attempts to explain the most important ones. The official copyright policy is provided on our FTP site in the file COPYRIGHT.txt; please consult this document for the latest information.

Please send any questions regarding copyright to the Ultima developers. Note, however, that we are not lawyers, and cannot give legal advice.

    Ultima Distribution Copyrights

The Ultima Linux distribution as whole is subject to the license and copyrights of individual software packages (generally provided with the package’s documentation in /usr/doc/, or as a file called COPYING, COPYRIGHT, LICENSE, or similar in the source archive). The most common licenses are the GNU General Public License, versions 2 and 3, but you should consult the specific packages’ license for more details.

Some packages’ licenses require that specific text be displayed in advertising materials and other locations; the texts for all known such packages are reproduced below:

The Linux(R) kernel is licensed under the GPLv2. According to Linus Torvalds,
    as quoted in /usr/src/linux/COPYING:

NOTE! This copyright does *not* cover user programs that use kernel
services by normal system calls - this is merely considered normal use
of the kernel, and does *not* fall under the heading of "derived work".
Also note that the GPL below is copyrighted by the Free Software
Foundation, but the instance of code that it refers to (the Linux
kernel) is copyrighted by me and others who actually wrote it.

Also note that the only valid version of the GPL as far as the kernel
is concerned is _this_ particular version of the license (ie v2, not
v2.2 or v3.x or whatever), unless explicitly otherwise stated.

All original Ultima Linux code is subject to the GPLv2, unless otherwise noted.

NOTE: We are required to provide any missing source to GPLv2'ed software for 3 years, per this section of the GNU General Public License:

        b) Accompany it with a written offer, valid for at least three
years, to give any third party, for a charge no more than your
cost of physically performing source distribution, a complete
machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code, to be
distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium
customarily used for software interchange; or,

We are also required to do the above, or provide access to copy the source that corresponds to your binaries from a network server in the case of materials which are licensed under the GPLv3 (see COPYING3 on the FTP site for the complete license).

If you discover that any source is missing – even if you don't need a copy – please e-mail <info@ultimalinux.com> to let us know. If source is missing and you *do* need a copy, please specify the package (and license) and we will get it to you as soon as possible.

    Website Copyrights

Content on the UltimaLinux.com site is, unless otherwise noted, copyrighted by its original author (generally Martin Ultima on the main site; the original poster on the forums; and all contributors in the page history on the wiki). With the exception of the wiki, which uses the GNU Free Documentation License, content on this site may not be re-used without the explicit permission of said author.

The “Evil Penguin Invasion” design may be used – within reason – for study or inspiration, but may not be copied outright, in order to preserve Ultima Linux’s visual identity. See the top of evilpenguin.css for details.

NOTE: If you want copyright information for the software powering the Web site, see the page on this site’s software configuration.

    Trademark Usage Guidelines

Ultima Linux trademarks and branding (including, but not limited to, the Ultima Linux name; Tuxette and other logos; and other original artwork files) may not be used for any commercial purpose without the permission of the Ultima Linux developers. This includes any commercial resale of the Ultima Linux product. Parties wishing to distribute the Ultima Linux product commercially must either contact the Ultima developers for permission, or remove all Ultima Linux branding from the product.

Non-commercial use of logos, and use (commercial or otherwise) of the Ultima product itself is otherwise unrestricted, except as described by each package’s license.
